So Why Obama?
(Continued)... Carly wanted to know what his strongest points are. I think Obama will restore World opinion our nation - post Iraq. There were very few politicians willing to make the stand Obama did by voting against the war. I admire his courage for that, took guts considering the post 911 mindset of the nation.Obama will immediately begin to remove our troops from Iraq. He will remove one to two combat brigades each month, and have all of our combat brigades out of Iraq within 16 months. Obama will make it clear that we will not build any permanent bases in Iraq. He will keep some troops in Iraq to protect our embassy and diplomats; if al Qaeda attempts to build a base within Iraq, he will keep troops in Iraq or elsewhere in the region to carry out targeted strikes on al Qaeda. We've fixed things enough in Iraq. Basra was the last straw for me as it showed the problems the Iraqi nation will have to deal with for decades to come. The Iraqis are a deeply divided society and I don't think we can help them anymore with a massive military presence. Obama will end the fantasy winning of the Iraq war. Only the Iraqis will win their civil war.
Obama and Clinton are very close when it comes to domestic policy. I do like Obama's Credit Card proposals. Health care seems to align with Clinton. Don't hear much from McCain about either issue as he seems to be focused on Iraq. We've had seven years of global adventures, time to focus on American issues. Both Obama or Clinton would be a domestic leader.
What sets Clinton apart from Obama is her slow response time. It took Clinton a long time to understand she might not win. By the time she did finally alter course, the contest was nearly out of reach for her. At some point Clinton took her eye off the ball and we can't afford that after eight years of Bush. The world is too dangerous to be asleep at the switch. Clinton had everything going her way and she blew it and then she did not even know she blew it.
Obama has demonstrated a steady attention to task at hand, by following the long primary route. Clinton followed the short, expected, primary season and could not change course when the contest failed to be decided early. The nation needs a leader who can go the distance and handle the unexpected. Obama is that leader and the millions of newly registered democrats are a just reward for steady attention to the task of winning the Whitehouse back.
That's the goal. A Democratic Whitehouse.
